Dunston UTS 2
Marske United 0

Dunston entertain their fellow EBAC Northern League side Marske for the replay of the FA Cup First Qualifying Round after both sides played in a competitive match last Saturday. As before last Saturdays games both sides were playing well in the league and their cup matches and both are are on long unbeaten spells in their fixtures. In the previous round Dunston beat Durham City, a fellow Northern League team and Marske beat Armthorpe.

The winners of tonight's game will play ex Northern league side Spennymoor  as per the draw on Monday morning. Tonight's game promises to be good one after the competitive game last Saturday which saw Marske take a deserved lead with a wonder strike, only to see Dunston reply with 2 goals in 3 minutes and then just on half time another wonder strike from an Owens free kick saw Marske equalise. The second half went without either team scoring but Dunston had to use all their resolve after Halliday was sent of for two cautions. Manager Billy Irwin is without the injured Craig Hodgson but Jonny Wightman is available giving him a strong squad to select from.

Marske had to bring in ex Dunston keeper as a late replacement for Dean who injured his elbow in the warm up, otherwise it was the same teams for both sides that started on Saturday to resume the challenge.

Dunston got the first opportunity on 3 minutes as Andy Bulford tried a  35 yard lob shot, which forced goal keeper Molyneux to back pedal 10 yards, as it just went over the bar. A minute later MacDonald tried a cross which went wide of the far post. On 7, Fenwick headed a ball square to Bulford who shot across the Marske box. The game was proving again to be a midfield battle as both sides vied for supremacy. Marske appeared to be getting the upper hand in the opening stages but Dunston were fighting all the way and their defence looked up for it.

On 12 Hillerby for Marske had a 30 yard shot which went wide. Gott for Marske released a shot on 20 minutes, which hit the post and rebounded into play and was cleared. On 25 Gott had a free kick which was just wide of the near post. On 28 Fenwick found himself with an opportunity on the edge of the box after a bit of indecision in the Marske defence, his shot was deflected for a corner From the corner by Harrison, Coulsons header was cleared off the line to Bulford who shot past the far post. A minute later Fenwick won a challenge  but shot wide of the far post. Another minute later Dunston put pressure on the Marske defence as Bulford put in a cross which went through to Harrison, his cross got back to Halliday who crossed, again the ball went through the box to Burrell who crossed again this time it was cleared by the thankful Marske defence.

Within a minute Fenwick was back with a shot which was well saved by Molyneux, pushing it round the post. Marske recovered and Kelly headed over the bar from a Gott cross. On 39, MacDonald was cautioned for a foul on the touch line on Bulford, from the free kick was taken by Halliday into a packed Marske goal area and after contact by Coulson the ball went into the bottom corner of the net. Dunston 1 - 0 up after 40 minutes. Marske trying hard to recover had a chance when Owens shot over the bar from 25 yards on 44 minutes, the last chance before half time saw Halliday put in a cross which Molyneux collected to relieve the pressure.

Half Time Score: 1-0

Marske came out in the second half roaring to go against the Dunston defence in a defiant mood, with Coulson standing out and he was ably supported by Gilhespy. On 50 minutes Johnston put in a low shot which went wide. 2 minutes later the Marske defence failed to clear and a miss hit clearance went up in the air giving Fenwick the opportunity to challenge Molyneux in the six yard box, Fenwick won but his header went wide of the goal, a minute later Shaw and Fenwick combined to give Fenwick a shot which Molyneux saved low down. On 55 Halliday and Ormston combined, Halliday crossed and the ball was cleared by the defence. Dunston now were on top of the game and were hunting for the second goal, on 64, Fenwick turned on the edge of the box and was tripped by Myers, the free kick from Bulford was blasted over the bar.

On 67 Woodhouse had a shot which was blocked by Connell and collected the rebound to ensure safety. Dunston replied with a Bulford chip which Molyneux collected, from the clearance Dunston replied with a cross which was met by Burrell's header which was wide of the target. After 70 Steven Shaw collected the ball and raced into the box before unleashing a shot which Molyneux saved well. On 77, Halliday put a long throw into the box, Coulson back headed the ball just wide of the far post right across the goal. Still hunting for the second goal Dunston continued to apply pressure on the Marske goal and on 79 minutes they got their reward as Halliday played in a low cross and Fenwick applied the side footed shot into the net from 6 yards out, 2-0 to Dunston.

On 83, Harrison supplied a cross for Dixon, who had been a stalwart in midfield, to apply a header which was deflected wide of the goal, from the corner by Gary Shaw, Coulson again applied the header which was wide of the target. Wilson on as a substitute for Fenwick was causing the Marske defence new problems and on 85 he received a ball from Ormston which was dispatched only just wide of the far post. The game continued with Dunston in control of a Marske side which continued to try to break down the Dunston defence to no avail.

Final Score: Dunston 2 Marske United  0

After a shaky 25 minutes were Marske were in the dominance Dunston took control of the game and deserved their victory with 2 goals which came from the continuous barrage of crosses into the Marske area. The Marske defence were not quite as solid as last Saturday and could not cope with the crosses effectively. The midfield battle for supremacy was continual but on the night Dunstons forwards were getting the better flow of opportunities and took their chances to beat a good and competitive Marske side. Dunston on the night produced a good team performance and deserved their victory and go on to meet the old foe Spennymoor at home on 27 September.

Dunston Man of Match: David Coulson, stood out as a giant and with the support of Luke Gilhespy they contained the Marske forwards who were stifled all night and rarely troubled Connell in the Dunston goal. Overall it was a good team performance and all players contributed to a good victory.
