Dunston welcomed Glossops North End for replay of the 5th round tie in the FA Vase after last Saturday's 2-2 draw after extra time. Both sides have changes to the line up but only one player from each side does not start, Kane for Dunston and Richardson for Glossops, with Wilson and Parker coming into the sides respectively.

Glossops got the first chance as Carey shot from 20 yards but it went well wide. Dunston quickly got into the game and pushed on, on 3 minutes an error in a defensive clearance and Bailey took advantage but his shot went over the bar. A minute later Wilson attacked on the right wing aided by Harrison who collected the ball and went to the by line and put in a cross which the Glossops defence failed to clear and Ormston was on hand to poke in a shot which took a big deflection and into the net 1-0 to Dunston after 4 minutes.

After 8 minutes a Halliday throw into the goal area found Wilson but the defence recovered to clear. On 10 a Harrison free kick was cleared as far as McAndrew whose shot was just wide and high of the target. 2 minutes later Bulford chased a long clearance and volleyed a shot on target which Hall in the Glossops goal saved. On 20 minutes Russell the Glossop left back ran at the Dunston defence and from 22 yards unleashed a shot which Connell collected. Dunston replied with Bulford crossing to Dixon who shot wide of the target.

Glossops were beginning to press Dunston back and on 23 minutes Moran had three consecutive attempts to cross to his players in the area the third was eventually cleared by the Dunston defence. On 25, a Glossop free kick was taken by Blackshaw which resulted in a header from Carey at the back post but the rebound went out for a goal kick. On 30 Bulford fed in Burrell whose shot from 10 yards was saved by Hall. 2 minutes later a Dixon 18 yard line header was saved from a Harrison free kick. On 33, Bailey deflected a shot from Moran just past the post. On 36, Parker picked up on another Dunston defensive clearance and Connell saved his 25 yard shot at full length pushing the ball clear.

Dunston rallied and had a shot by Halliday which was wide of the front post. Glossop replied and Carey beat Halliday and shot from a narrow angle over the bar. 2 minutes later Carey turned Gilhespy but his shot was deflected to the grateful Connell. On 43 from a Harrison corner, Ormston got in a shot which was cleared off the line and just before the half time whistle Bailey put in a cross come shot which Connell collected.

Glossop started well in the second half resulting in a Carey cross on 47 which Coulson did well to clear, and then on 49 Bailey had shot blocked by Halliday.On 57 a Dunston attack came from a Harrison free kick, Glossop cleared their box and broke away and only some good defence by Gilhespy aided by Harrison resulted in the danger being averted. A minute later Dixon got a header in from a McAndrew cross. On 60 Wilson did well to turn and shoot which went just past the near post, this was followed by a deep Halliday cross which Hall dealt with well. On 61 Bailey had a shot which Connell watched go past his near post followed by a Carey shot come cross which also went wide of the near post.

Glossop were lookin for the equaliser and on 70 White on as substitute collected a short free kick and shot wide, 3 minutes later, another Halliday long throw was deflected over the bar. On 76, White fed Russell who ran at the Dunston defence and unleashed a curling shot which evaded the diving Connell and just inside the back post for the equaliser. Dunston were hit hard and although they tried to rally the game stagnated for a period until the 85th minute when a Young free kick was played through straight to Connell who collected, a minute later another Young free kick was blocked by the Dunston wall and then on 90 minutes another Glossops free kick went straight through to Connell.

Full Time 1-1 extra time to be played.

Glossops won a corner in the 93 minute and the ball was deflected over the bar from the next corner the Dunston defence failed to clear and the ball fell to Young 15 yards out who powerfully drove his shot into the Dunston net. 2-­‐1 to Glossops, Dunston were reeling but on 97 Halliday played a low cross into the area which was cleared for a corner, from the corner Dixon got in a header which went over the bar. Glossop rallied and Lugsden picked up a loose defensive ball meant for Gilhespy and advanced into the box and shot past the diving Connell for 3-1 to Glossops.

Glossops controlled the play for the remainder of the game as Dunston failed to respond and nearly scored a fourth goal as Carey had a shot which Connell tipped onto the cross bar and over. Dunston's only response was a Williams shot which went wide.

Final score: Dunston 1 Glossop NE 3 aet.

Dunston lacked the positive performance of last week despite taking an early lead and also having opportunities to increase their lead. Glossops never gave in and worked hard against a lacking Dunston midfield controlling most of the game and eventually got their reward of an equaliser. Glossops then controlled the extra time taking advantage of the Dunston defensive errors and score twice in the first half and Dunston unable to get back into the game reluctantly accepting defeat.

Dunston Man of the Match: Dan Halliday - Dan tried hard but on a day when several Dunston players did not turn in their usual performances was always fighting a losing battle, Liam Connell was also committed but Dunston lacked the ability to press home their early lead and made too many elementary errors both in attack and defence.

Dunston travelled south again to Derbyshire for a 5th round tie in the FA Vase to play Glossop North End of the Northern West Counties League. Glossop North End (GNE) claim to fame is that they are the smallest town to have a Football League side in the late 1800's. They were also losing finalists in the 2009 FA Vase Final against Whitley Bay. “The Hillmen” are having a good season, currently standing second in the league and doing well in their local cup games. In what promises to be a competitive game Dunston are at almost full strength with only Craig Hodgson and the cup-tied Dan Smith unavailable for selection. The weather has improved from last week but with rising temperatures the rain will make the pitch sticky, a vast difference to the frozen, snow covered pitch of last week.

Glossop started strongly and in the first minute Carey was played through but Connell was alert and collected the ball on the edge of the area. Dunston responded with McAndrew beating his marker and powering in a low cross which was cleared. On 4 minutes a poor clearance by Connell was crossed into the area and Harrison had to head clear. From the corner Young fired high over the cross-bar from 20 yards out. On 6 minutes an under-hit  back-pass from Kane to Connell saw Connell bravely block the ball and from there it was cleared. 2 minutes later a long throw from Halliday fell to Kane but his header was collected by Hall. Play was end-to-end as Glossop’s Lugsden had an effort cleared by Ormston and then a Richardson cross from a free-kick went right across the goal and out for a goal-kick. On 12 minutes Harrison put in a free-kick which was just deflected away from Coulson in the area.

From the corner taken by Halliday an Ormston header went just wide of the far post. On 15 minutes Dixon knocked the ball into the Glossop net after the  keeper had fumbled but it was disallowed when the referee deemed that he had been fouled after he collided with his own centre-half. After a frantic start, play started to settle with both sides still very competitive.

On 20 minutes Bailey met a long cross but his shot was cleared by Dixon. On 22 minutes Burrell attempted a volley from 20 yards which went wide, followed by a neat interchange between three Dunston players saw a shot from Harrison just go wide of the far post. A minute later Blackshaw had an effort which was deflected with Connell unable to prevent the corner.

On 30 minutes Bailey got in a shot which Connell saved. Glossop had a strong penalty claim as Kane challenged a Glossop player in the box but the referee did not give it. On 40 minutes Ormston laid the ball off to Dixon, received the return and his shot just curved away past the far post. A competitive half ended with a Moran shot from 35 yards out which Connell safely collected.

Dunston got the first chance in the second-half as Burrell lofted a shot over the bar on 49 minutes and then Bulford was played through and his left footed shot went wide of the near post. On 53 minutes a Harrison corner was deflected just over the bar by a defender. The first goal came on 63 minutes when the Glossop defence failed to clear the area and the ball fell to Harrison who drove in a shot which was going wide until Andy Bulford deflected it past a despairing Hall. 1 - 0 to Dunston.

Glossop replied within 2 minutes as Jason Carey appeared to foul Coulson and got a firm header on the end of a Young free-kick and beat Connell in the Dunston goal. 1 - 1.

On 68 minutes McAndrew got in a deep cross which was just too high for the in-rushing Ormston. On 73 minutes the referee made yet another error as he adjudged Gilhespy had fouled Blackshaw in the box when all around saw it as a good challenge with the Glossop wide-man falling over the blocked ball. Gilhespy was dismissed for a second yellow card and Tom Bailey stepped up to confidently score from the spot. 2 - 1 to Glossop.

On 77 minutes Connell had to be alert again and he collected on the edge of his area as Bailey was played through by Richardson. On 78 minutes a long-free kick by Connell into the Glossop area found Coulson but his header was deflected clear by the keeper. On 79 minutes a Glossop shot was blasted in on target but Harrison headed clear. 3 minutes later Dunston were level as Wilson won a ball in the area, his lay off to Kane enabled him to play through to Gary Ormston who side stepped his marker and shot low inside the near post past a startled Hall. 2 - 2.

Glossop’s other Lugsden, Kelvin, got in a low shot-cum-cross on 84 minutes which Connell collected then 2 minutes later Wilson connected to a Harrison free-kick which was cleared. Richardson put in a deep cross into the Dunston area which Harrison cleared. On 90 minutes a long clearance from Connell played in Bulford but his shot beat both the keeper and the far post. With the final whistle looming, Moran had a shot which flew wide before the referee blew to take the game into extra time.

The extra man was proving positive for Glossop as a Lugsden shot was taken by Connell on 93 minutes then Richardson dribbled past 2 men and attempted a chip shot which Connell saved easily. Dunston then had a Wilson drive on target which was blocked before Richardson drove in a shot which Connell first blocked and then collected. Glossop then had a Bailey header saved by Connell on 98 minutes. Dunston came back with a Wilson shot on target after Kane had fed the ball back to him.

As the first-half of extra-time ended Parker tried an overhead kick which Connell tipped over the bar. The final period started with Carey getting in a header which Connell stopped and then Young had a header from a corner which went high over the bar on 110 minutes. Dunston got a free-kick 25 yards out but Burrell blasted his kick into the wall and from the rebound Harrison drove in a shot which went over the bar on 112 minutes. Dunston worked hard to stay in the game as Glossop pushed on against the 10 men and on 115 minutes Hind had shot which went wide of the post and then Bailey shot over the bar from 18 yards with Glossop’s final chance.

Dunston Man of the Match: David Coulson - a giant in defence protecting his goal from a bombardment of crosses into the area and several important tackles. David was closely followed by his fellow defenders and Michael Dixon and Gary Ormston in midfield.

Dunston welcome West Allotment Celtic to the UTS Stadium for the Ebac Northern League Division 1 game.  Dunston without a game in 2 weeks will be glad to get back into action before there important 5th round FA Vase game at Glossop. Dunston through cup games and postponements find themselves slowly sinking in league position but still command a respectable 6th position with 54 points from 28 games, whilst their opponents West Allotment Celtic are in 17th position with 32 points from 29 games.

Dunston will remember the reverse fixture earlier in the season when they lost 2-1 after controlling the greater majority of the game and were leading 1-0 in the first-half. Manager Billy Irwin had a near full squad to choose from except for Stephen Harrison and Craig Hodgson but rested Liam Connell in preparation for Saturday.

Dunston started well and immediately put Allotment under early pressure and on 8 minutes Bulford picked up a poor clearance by keeper Mullen but his lofted shot went over the bar. A minute later Andy Bulford made no mistake as he moved onto a ball in the area and on his second touch a shot was hammered into the roof of the net. 1 - 0 to Dunston.

 

 

After 12 minutes Allotment had their first chance as a Henderson shot from 20 yards was deflected but Clark prevented a corner. On 17 minutes a McAndrew cross was deflected goalwards by a defender but Mullen was alert and saved well. 2 minutes later Kane went down the left-wing and played in a low cross which was blocked and cleared, this was followed by a first time cross by McAndrew on the right-wing which found Bulford whose shot was just wide of the far post.

 

On 24 minutes Halliday played a defence-splitting ball into the run of Bulford, but as Bulford broke clear he was fouled by Pendlebury who should have received more than just a ticking-off by the referee as Bulford was clear on goal. From the resulting free-kick Dunston got their second goal on 25 minutes when Dale Burrell drove into the net with aid of a slight deflection. 2 – 0 to Dunston.

 

Dunston were well on top and could have got a third goal as McAndrew received a ball from Bulford, but his shot went over the bar from a good position. Allotment were still in the game and on 30 minutes Sean Reid combined with Fenwick and his shot from 20 yards  just beat Clark’s despairing dive and crept into the bottom corner. 2 - 1 to Dunston.

 

 

This goal lifted Allotment and on 35 minutes Halliday did well to head clear a cross from Hudson for corner. The Dunston defence failed to clear and when an effort went past Clark, the covering Luke Gilhespy instinctively threw out a hand and prevented the ball going in. Gilhespy received a red-card and the resulting penalty was hammered home to Clark’s left by Sean Reid for his second goal of the game. 2 – 2.

 

Dunson reacted and Ormston got in a shot from 25 yards which went narrowly wide. Allotment attacked the reorganised Dunston defence at every opportunity and Henderson had a shot blocked by Coulson on 38 minutes. Dunston now playing with 10 men had a further opportunity just on half-time as Kane got in a header from a McAndrew cross which hit a defender and bounced out for a corner with the keeper beaten.

The second half started with Dunston regaining their composure and on 51 minutes Kane received a ball on the edge of the box but as he was turning he fell and so the opportunity passed. 2 minutes later Kane got a powerful shot in but it went harmlessly into the side netting. On 60 minutes Allotment’s Henderson had a shot from 20 yards that was deflected into the path of Fenwick whose shot was saved by Clark. On 64 minutes Ormston headed on a Halliday long-throw into the area and Smith was only inches away from making contact at the front post as Mullen collected. On 65 minutes a long free-kick into the Allotment area just evaded the onrushing forwards at the back post and went out for a goal- kick.

 

 

Allotment responded and only a good back-tracking challenge by Dixon broke the move down on the edge of the box. A minute later Clark saved low down from a Bell shot. On 76 minutes Burrell advanced into the Allotment box and his venomous shot was deflected onto a post and out for a corner. The flag-kick resulted in a good Halliday cross being collected by Mullen under pressure from Coulson. With both sides pressing for a winner and defences holding out the attacks it was Dunston again on 80 minutes who almost broke the deadlock as a Bulford shot was defected but an alert Mullen again saved.

 

On 85 minutes Parkinson, on as a substitute for Allotment, had a shot which was deflected for a corner from which Henderson hammered a volley towards goal but Ormston did well to block and clear. A minute later McGlen played a low ball dangerously across the Dunston goalmouth but the strikers were unable to apply the finish. As the game approached the minute of added-on time Wightman, on as substitute for Bulford, played in a shot which beat Mullen but was cleared off the line by the covering Allen for a corner. The corner was played deep to the back post and when Allotment failed to clear Gary Ormston somehow managed to force the ball past a sea of bodies in the packed area and into the net for the deciding goal. 3 - 2 to Dunston.

 

The Referee blew for full-time immediately after the restart to ensure a hard won victory by the ten men of Dunston.

Dunstons Man of the Match: Dale Burrell – back to fitness and put in a great shift at covering as a full-back for the best part of an hour, his tackling and attacking efforts were an inspiration to the rest of the team.
