Dunston welcomed Sunderland RCA to the UTS Stadium for the EBAC Northern League Division 1 game, their first home game of the season and their second game of the season after a successful travel to Bedlington Terriers saw them score 8 goals without reply on Saturday.

Sunderland RCA had a home game last Saturday and went down 2-0 to Consett. Dunston manager Billy Irwin had a full squad to select from and only made one change to the Saturday Starting line-up as Malky Morien scorer of a hat-trick after coming off the bench on 63 minutes replaces Andrew Bulford.

Sunderland RCA started well and applied pressure on the Dunston defence, on 3 minutes Hughes was played into the box by Hope, he played the ball past Connell but the ball went wide of the near post, Dunston rallied on 5 minutes as Halliday scorer of a good goal on Saturday made space for himself until he entered the penalty area where a good tackle by Brown was good enough to prevent a shot. Dunston gradually settled into the game and on 9 minutes Burrell was played in by Francis, his shot was blocked, on 10, it was Richardson who was fed into the area behind his marker and he slotted a shot past Morris into the net for 1-0 to Dunston.

On 12, Pearson Had a shot from 25 yards out which went over the bar, two minutes later Dan Smith received a ball on the right and entered the area from where he released a shot into the far corner of the net for 2-0 to Dunston. In the build up to the goal the Sunderland centre back Hatch was injured and forced to leave the field. On 21 minutes Hughes for RCA was also injured and limped off the pitch although it was 7 minutes before a replacement entered the field. During this period Sunderland had a good effort from a Davis cross which Connell had to palm away for Pearson to clear the area. On 29 minutes, Burrell headed a Francis corner high over the bar from 10 yards out, a long clearance by Connell found Morien on the edge of the box and his lay back to Briggs enabled a shot on target which was saved by Morris.

Four minutes later Morien again created a chance as his pulled back cross found Smith whose header was taken well by the goalkeeper. Sunderland still trying hard had another chance on 36 as Hors
ley beat Halliday in the box and his poked shot went wide of the near post. A minute later Morien again picked up a ball on the edge of the box and shot wide of the far post. On 42 a Francis free kick was headed goalwards only for Morris to tip over the bar, a minute later from a Francis short corner returned from Richardson, the cross come shot was deflected goalwards across the RCA goal. Dunston and Morien got the third goal after he deftly lobbed Morris after Pearson had played him into the area.

The score at half-time was Dunston 3 Sunderland RCA 0.

Dunston came out after the break and on 46 minutes Smith broke through and shot was deflected by Morris and struck the post before going out of play. 4 minutes later, Francis made space and shot forcing Morris to save low to his left. Meanwhile Sunderland were still working hard to get back into the game and Horsley had a shot which Connell collected, on 53, Burrell replied with a low cross that Morris did well to collect. On 61, Burrell did well to control a high ball on the edge of the box; however his volleyed shot went over the bar. 2 minutes later Morien turned well on the edge of the box and his shot was deflected for a corner.
Sunderland replied with another Horsley shot which was blocked by Wilkinson and cleared. On 74, Francis put a 20 yard free kick just over Morris’ left upright. 4 minutes later Smith played a low cross into the area which was cleared before the Dunston forwards could pounce, this was followed by a back post cross by Francis which Bulford was just unable to redirect on target. On 81 minutes Pattison crossed into Horsley and his shot was partly blocked as Connell collected. On 82, Francis tried a 25 yard effort which dipped just after it went over the cross bar, then Bulford pulled a ball back into the area but no other Dunston forward could get close to it.

On 86, Bulford tried a shot from 18 yards but it went wide of the near post before Richardson unleashed a 25 yard shot which went over the bar. As the game approached 90 minutes Richardson scored Dunstons fourth goal after Smith had again played a low cross into the area, Richardson’s first shot was rebounded off the keeper and his powerful second shot flew into the net. Not content with 4 Halliday was fed in by Francis and his powerful shot on 90 minutes was well saved by Morris diving along his line.

Final Score Dunston UTS 4 Sunderland RCA 0

Dunston won the battle but RCA did not give in easily although they did not really trouble Connells goal at all. Dunston played well in parts although due to the tiresome RCA challenges in midfield were at times fighting to gain overall control. Overall a good performance by all involved for Dunston leaving room for improvement in future games.

Dunston’s Man of the Match: Dan Smith he worked tirelessly in midfield both at the back and up front, he scored a good goal and played in some dangerous crosses which could also have resulted in more goals. As previously stated however it was a good team performance with Morien, Richardson, Burrell Francis and Briggs creating opportunities while the defence coped well with the RCA attack.

Dunston UTS: Connell, Pearson, Halliday, Burrell, Wilkinson (Martindale 83), Gilhespy, Smith, Francis, Richardson, Morien (Bulford 72), Briggs. Subs not used: Wilson, Hodgson.
